They say a watched pot never boils and thus far I can say with all sincerity that a watched udder never changes! Ok, in all fairness there really shouldn't be any changes quite yet so no news is good news. A mare that bags up to early can have placentitis and that is a serious condition that requires immediate veterinary care. In the final weeks though it is normal for the mare to start bagging up gradually. Some mares will fill overnight and then go down again during the day with increased activity. You may also find the mare leaks a small amount of milk. Any large loss of milk though can lead to a loss of colostrum that is crucial to the foal in the first 8 hours. For these reasons it is extremely important to make frequent checks of the udder. In my case I am also taking photos so that I have a visual record.
